The Sha of Humanity

The more I play Mists of Pandaria, the more I see something that Blizzard is commenting on, intentionally or not.  In this expansion, we are introduced to the new land, and a new threat.  They are called the Sha and they are demons which manifest from the darkness in our hearts.  They are pointing out that hatred, anger, violence, despair, doubt and fear are slowly destroying us as a people.  They are the evil demons inside us that are slowly eroding our way of life, and the worst part is that the organizations which are supposed to be there to protect our goodness, our souls, are perpetuating this.

Religion, once the bastion to save our souls, to help bring kindness and compassion and love to the world, are once again becoming a weapon of evil.  I say this since it has happened in history many times, but it is again in the forefront.  We are being told that anyone who is a Muslim is a terrorist, anyone who is of a new age religion is a worthless hippie, anyone who is an atheist is an evil heartless monster.  And because so many people do not want to think for themselves, they believe it without question.

Freedom is a Lie

We are told continuously that the Western world is a bastion of freedom.  That places like the Middle East, China and all those 'evil' places around the world where terrorists hide are without freedom.  But are we really free?  Are we free to live as we want?  Are we free to do as we want?  No, there are many rules which limit our freedoms.  Some of these rules are put in place for our protection, some to keep things running smoothly, but there are some that have no place ever being made into law.

Which laws am I referring to?  Any law which takes a personal choice away from you for no reason.  Denying people the right to marry or receive benefits from their spouse because they are the same gender as you is one.  Stopping people from being able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy within their own body is one.  Requiring certain religions from elected officials in certain states is definitely one.  I am sure some smokers will jump up and say that no smoking bans fall into this, but that is not true.  stopping you from poisoning the air of other people is not without reason.  But it does lead nicely into the real problem.

The Real Enemy

What is driving this insane need to control everyone else's life?  Why is it that certain groups, be they religious, political or ideological, have this pressing urge to impose their belief system by law, forcing everyone else to follow it?  Simple.  An overinflated sense of entitlement.  I have been saying this for ages, and I will say it again.

People are becoming so used to having their own way, to getting what they want that they are believing that everyone else should only be allowed to have what they want.  It is becoming disgusting, and as someone who worked in customer service for a lot of his life, I witnessed it escalating.

Years ago, you would only occasionally hear a customer say "the customer is always right" because most customers realized that sometimes they were wrong.  But then some companies, large ones in fact, started pretty much letting customers walk all over them.  And they started a trend.  The average consumer found that they could get what they wanted if they just screamed loud enough, or went high enough.

But this isn't the only culprit.  After all, we all know religions are historically responsible for this kind of encouragement of curtailing other's rights to fit their beliefs.  The Spanish Inquisition is a perfect example of that.  And as someone mentioned, that is exactly what happened to the Republicans in the US: They were hijacked by religious southern nut jobs, and now they are more about religion than they are about freedom and less government.  Doesn't it seem wrong that a party historically known for wanting LESS government intervention is pushing for MORE government regulation of people's personal choices in partners/religion/birth control?

What Can We Do?

For one thing, STOP BEING SO DAMN SELFISH.  That will go a long way.  Go volunteer at the local homeless shelter.  Next step is to remember one important thing: EVERYONE has the RIGHT to live their life AS THEY WANT TO.  If they want to marry the same gender, have an abortion, and worship a flying spaghetti monster, they have every right to.  And not you, nor anyone else has a right to tell them they can't.  If you think you have that right, I have one message: You are not that important.  I am just as important as you are, and I say that their opinion matters, and they have the right to do it.  If you think that you can force anyone to do what you want through laws, you may find one day it is your choices being outlawed.  Are you willing to risk that?

So true, too bad most schools don't teach Orwell's work anymore.

unfortunately that would foster the discussion of critical thinking. that runs in opposition to the running trend of education in the us since about the late 80s. :(

i'd follow the trail a bit higher up to the lobbyist extensions of corporate interests. it now seems that it doesn't matter who gets elected, money runs washington now. we will have to see what obama does with this 4 year extension.
